Cozy Mystery Dream Team

What amateur sleuth, best friend, cozy companion (animal), and love interest would make your cozy mystery dream team and why?

Amateur Sleuth – I had to cheat on this and say Charlotte’s Angels and Sarah Grayson from the Second Chance Cat mystery series by Sofie Ryan – I know when they are on the case it will be solved.

Best Friend – Megan from The Noodle Shop series by Vivien Chien – She is always there for Lana even if she wants to do something crazy like meet with a murderer. Plus, she got Lana a book on how to investigate crimes. That was the best! I’m like why don’t other amateur sleuths get a book on how to investigate crimes.

Cozy Companion – Hercules and Owen from Magical Cats mystery series by Sofie Kelly – their abilities to disappear and walk through walls and doors could come in handy to apprehend the murderer. Plus, they are super loyal to Kathleen and want to help her solve the crimes. We will have to have a lot of sardine crackers on hand to keep them happy though.

Love Interest – Mike “Sully” Sullivan from Library Lovers mystery series by Jenn McKinlay – He’s my fictional boyfriend LOL. He was in the military and always ends up getting Lyndsey out of trouble so he is a good love interest to have.

How I Discovered Cozy Mysteries, My First Cozy Mystery Series, and Library Love

I first discovered cozy mysteries in the New Release section of my local public library. I was just looking for my next read and the punny title and cute cover drew me in.

My first cozy mystery series is Magical Cats by Sofie Kelly. This series is still amongst my favorites of all time. It has some of my favorite themes cats and library. When I mention this series to others they often ask me if this is a kid or adult series.

I love the public library. There is something magical and enchanting about finding the right book to suit my mood. Reading a book is like embarking on an adventure to me.

My Thoughts On Romance In Cozy Mysteries

I like light clean romance in a cozy mystery. Light romance that doesn’t overshadow the mystery since that’s why I read cozy mysteries. I don’t mind if the main character dates a law enforcement person or not as long as they are confident in themselves and bring that to the relationship. I do like romances that start with a friendship and then several books down the line blossom into a marriage. I do like the series to continue when the characters are married so we can see that side of the relationship too. I don’t like love triangles and cheating in cozy mysteries. I feel like the author writes a love triangle to add conflict when solving the mystery is enough of a conflict for me.

Likes:

  • Light romance – not taking away from the mystery
  • Clean Romance
  • Friends first
  • Second chance love with childhood sweetheart or friend
  • Love after loss of spouse
  • Romance with older characters
  • Romance that each person is there for one another/true partners
  • Romances that move to marriage
  • Books that take place after the marriage
  • Law enforcement and non-law enforcement romances
  • Main character confident in relationship

Dislikes:

  • Romances that overshadow the mystery
  • Love Triangles
  • Cheating
  • Spicy romance and hooking up
  • Excessive pining over love interest

What is a cozy mystery?

A cozy mystery or cozies are a mystery subgenre where all of the violence/murder takes place off stage and usually take place in a small town or a tight knit community. They have an amateur sleuth that solves the crime with a lot of quirky side characters. A lot of times the amateur sleuth is a woman but many cozy mysteries are now featuring an amateur sleuth that are men. There is no profanity, sex, or violence. Cozy mysteries are written with a theme like a hobby, an occupation, or an animal which makes them fun to read.

While de-emphasizing sex and violence cozy mysteries are focused on puzzle solving rather than suspense. The puzzle solving aspect makes these books perfect to get your mind off of things going on in your life.
